Beer Bottle Insulated Floor

I have had a little bit of time off of work, so Timmy and I took Py on his first camping/hiking adventure. We headed out to visit a friend in the Hoh Rainforest right next to Ruby Beach.  Sterling's Homestead is 7 years in the making and he had some great projects going on.

On the first level of the house he had taken and graded sand from the beach about 4 inches deep.  Now he is taking beer bottles and ramming them into the sand and making an insulated floor.  Once the bottles are finished being placed he is going to run pex tubing on top of the bottles and put an earthen floor and utilize radiant heat.

Here is a top view of the bottles.  They make a nice undulating honey comb and are very strong once they are packed in.  Sterling wants to make another floor just out of bottles because they offer an amazing aesthetic.

There was in incredible amount of old growth cedar on the property.  Sterling did some work for a neighbor and received this old growth cedar driftwood log in payment.  He placed it as a post in the center of the first floor of the house.  I scored a few small pieces of straight grained old growth cedar pieces for carvings, too!

He is building a cord wood wall with a bottle window in the lower section of the house.
